Holding On To Hope
69 Days, 8 hours.
That's how long 33 miners in Chile spend underneath over 2,000 feet of rock, isolated from the outside world. They had each other and their faith- and the hope that someday, they would be reunited with their families and friends.
Can you imagine spending over two months in the dark? Although there was limited communication with the surface, the environment that these men survived in had to have been pretty primitive compared to our homes and places of business. Two months is a long time for anyone, but it had to feel like eternity to them.
There was no television, Internet access, movies, restaurants or outdoor activities to pass the time. Amenities like bathrooms, heat, microwaves and cellular service were unlikely to be available. They were working diligently to help plan their own escape, digging in three shifts. One thing there was plenty of, was time to truly connect with other human beings and to think about what's important. There was ample time for prayer as well. Can you imagine how their outlook on life has permanently changed?
Thankfully, everyone is safe now. God bless them!
Good Night
